Interesting times for Turkey-watchers
These days. My own sense is that, however vivid Turkish anti-Americanism is at the moment, serious Turks understand that it’s a whim they can indulge only in the absence of external threats. And for all Turkey’s dependence on Russian natural gas, Russia is Turkey’s enemy par excellence back to the 1600s, the two spilling blood all over the Balkans, Black Sea, and Caucasus. Control of the Bosporus and the Dardanelles has been a Russian strategic goal (akin to the quest for warm-water ports) for centuries. My guess is that in the end, the Turks will side with their annoying but ultimately unthreatening ally rather than their rich buddy who likes to play with guns. But I’ve been wrong before.
