Re: Another Non-Victory for the Scientific President [Updated]
The Volgi (who opposes embryonic stem-cell research for the Czar’s practical reasons—having read about teeth and hair showing up in a Parkinson’s patient’s brain in an ESC experiment—as well as the usual retrograde moral ones) also should note that Bush didn’t ban embryonic stem-cell research. He just banned the federal government’s funding it. State governments (I’m looking at you, California) and private industry were free to do as they liked. Obviously, scientists love sucking on the gubmint teat, since the Feds are notoriously undemanding and tend to just keep renewing and upping grants, so congratulations, Drs. Frankenstein, Moreau, Jeckyll, et al. You’ll be getting that new lab equipment soon!
I know, I’m libelling Victor Frankenstein—he worked with cadaver tissue.
Updated: I stand corrected:
Of course there never was a ban on federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research. President Bush was, in fact, the first president in history to fund embryonic stem cell research. The compromise Bush reached, however, put restrictions in place that prevented the further destruction of human embryos. It is these restrictions protecting human life that Obama has lifted.
