Are the wheels coming off the bus?
Last night on my way home I heard a “top of the hour” news piece in which the station played a clip of Obama being interviewed where he made the statement that the deadline for passing Obamacare before the August congressional recess wasn’t his deadline – it was a deadline “set by the American people” because without a deadline in Washington inertia and inaction take over. Ok, I can buy the latter but I’ll cry foul on former.
In reality, I think the problem is this: (1) Obama has faced little opposition in his short tenure as an elected official and finally people are standing up against his plans (most elected officials rolled over on the Stimulus bill and there was little effective opposition to the “Cap and Trade” bill), (2) Obama’s approval numbers are declining – declining at a time when his plans are passing and very little other activity is going on, so what’s driving that decline? and (3) the general public is starting to second guess some of the “urgency” comments and realize that cutting programs that employ thousands if not tens of thousands of people while saying that you’re “saving or creating” jobs is hard to reconcile.
Some cases in point:
This isn’t the only one – Ben Cardin (D-MD) faced similar opposition at a town hall meeting from a small business owner. Sec. of HHS also faced some opposition recently over the Health Care plans.
Even the POTUS himself lets the truth slip out.
Congress reversed the decision by the White House to close 800 auto dealerships – I’m sure the President isn’t happy they’re mucking around with his master plan there.
Let me put it plainly – the deadline for passing Obamacare before the recess is that Rahm Emmanuel and his other advisors are worried that he won’t have the political power or public support for a bill of this size, with this much cost at stake, and for which something people are starting to second guess the need. Doctors are bailing out of the AMA over this because that group won’t stand up against it. They rightfully fear that it will not control costs and instead in effect elevate nurses and assistants to doctor-levels in the situations of diagnosis and treatment.
