Transparent, right?
To continue a meme from my last post, I’ll reference a FoxNews item. Apparently, President Obama and democrat congress members are meeting to hammer out a compromise on the health care reform bill differences between the house and senate. Now, it’s my recollection that the Constitution provides a means for doing this in a conference committee process between the chambers…but then again, that’s just the Constitution. The pertinent details follow:
The format for talks is drawing criticism from Republicans who contend Democrats are operating in secret. “President Obama has broken his pledge to the American people to be transparent throughout this process,” Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said Tuesday.
As a candidate, Obama pledged during a presidential debate in January 2008 that he would be “bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are.”
That has not occurred, and even C-SPAN is taking note. The network released a letter Tuesday from chief executive Brian Lamb to congressional leaders asking for the talks to be opened to cameras.
“President Obama, Senate and House leaders, many of your rank-and-file members, and the nation’s editorial pages have all talked about the value of transparent discussions on reforming the nation’s health care system,” Lamb wrote in the Dec. 30 letter. “Now that the process moves to the critical stage of reconciliation between the chambers, we respectfully request that you allow the public full access, through television, to legislation that will affect the lives of every single American.”
On a side note, representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) said, “this country wants us to move on health care reform.” Another example of how out of touch this congress is or maybe how arrogant it is – I’ll cite the average from the polls shown here to demonstrate that, no, the country does NOT want congress to move on health care.
