Begin the SCARification?
SOCOM is putting the SCAR in the field. (Both the 5.56mm Mk 16 [at right] and the 7.62mm Mk 17 for those of you scoring at home.)
This is a pretty big deal in small arms as it’s the most credible replacement for the M16 ever fielded, and as the linked article mentions, it’s been heavily tested. That said, it’s no shoo-in. The natural, understandable conservatism of military procurement officials frequently turns into mulish obstinacy. It’s no coincidence that the gun is coming out under the auspices of SOCOM, special operations units long having more flexibility in the weapons they use than regular units.
This’ll be interesting to watch, as the SCAR will doubtless encounter problems as every gun does, but if it does well, it may be a prohibitive favorite to replace the M16.
Too bad you can’t buy Groupe Herstal stock…
