Where’s the Hope Now?
So the Obama 2012 campaign just launched an effort to design artwork in support of Stimulus Part IIJobs Plan and re-election. A bit late on the Jobs Plan…but that might be a hallmark for this administration. The top three selected “winners” will be given framed copies of their artwork autographed by the President. However, here is the kicker: artists who submit works will not get paid for their work and they must relinquish rights to the artwork.
Matt Bors, a syndicated artist was quoted on the Huffington Post:
“Everyone’s time is wasted except for the winner, and they’re not even compensated,” said Bors, whose work has appeared in The Nation and The Village Voice, among other outlets. “It brings down rates for everybody. Just imagine this scenario with any other profession. You don’t have contests with your plumber.”
The article continues later with:
When asked about the Obama design contest, Mark Collins, the U.K.-based artist who founded AntiSpec.com, directed HuffPost to a blog post on his website, in which he panned the campaign for not hiring designers: “Obama’s use of spec work here sends a clear message to businesses everywhere that harvesting potentially 1,000s of free design hours is acceptable to promote your business/cause. It isn’t. Worse still it reinforces spec work in the minds of young designers.”
We all know about the Obama Administration’s fascination with logos and artwork. So now they are pissing off a group that is generally supportive of Democrats – again, the Obama Amateur Hour continues. You would think that they would have noodled this through.

GorT is an eight-foot-tall robot from the 51ˢᵗ Century who routinely time-travels to steal expensive technology from the future and return it to the past for retroinvention. The profits from this pay all the Gormogons’ bills, including subsidizing this website. Some of the products he has introduced from the future include oven mitts, the Guinness widget, Oxy-Clean, and Dr. Pepper. Due to his immense cybernetic brain, GorT is able to produce a post in 0.023 seconds and research it in even less time. Only ’Puter spends less time on research. GorT speaks entirely in zeros and ones, but occasionally throws in a ڭ to annoy the Volgi. He is a massive proponent of science, technology, and energy development, and enjoys nothing more than taking the Czar’s more interesting scientific theories, going into the past, publishing them as his own, and then returning to take credit for them. He is the only Gormogon who is capable of doing math. Possessed of incredible strength, he understands the awesome responsibility that follows and only uses it to hurt people.
