Dr. J’s 12 Days of Christmas Music – Day 5
More nostalgia for our gentle readers. For GenX-ers The Charlie Brown Christmas Special and The Grinch That Stole Christmas (the Chuck Jones/Boris Karloff classic, not that Jim Carrey trainwreck) were appointment television, especially in the years when they were broadcast back to back because it was your only shot at watching them that year. DVRs and DVD players didn’t exist they weren’t being broadcast on cable, and most folk didn’t even own a VCR or betamax (‘Puter), and if they did they had to record it because the ubiquity of TV shows and movies for sale were limited and were priced outrageously. Now, Dr. J. is subjected to watching the Grinch in July and The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer year round.
Day 5 brings you the classic song from the Grinch, You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch. This song has been covered a few times. Indeed two modern rock bands are in heavy rotation on the satellite radio.
Rather than bring you the original, because as classic and iconic as it is, Boris Karloff is not Dr. J.’s idea of a vocalist, and it is the Doctor’s list and not yours, gentle reader, he is going with the Sixpence None The Richer’s version.
Dr. J. went with this version because Leigh Nash has a great voice and brings a touch of spunk and sass to this version, it’s a unique cover, and because Sixpence None The Richer live in Tennessee, not terribly far from New Atlantis.
