The Papal Paradox or Looks Who’s Coming to Conclave
“Hey God, when’s there going to be an American Pope?” “In time, in time, but not while I’m God!” |
The mainstream media hates the Catholic Church, but they love stories about the Catholic Church because for good or for ill Catholic news stories draw in viewers.
Indeed in recent days after Pope Benedict XVI announced his retirement, this article came up expressing disgust that Cardinal Mahony, who was removed from public duties by Archbishop Gomez (Los Angeles) for his role in cover-ups of sexually abusive priests would be participating in the Conclave. Dr. J. and ‘Puter agreed offline that he should not be participating in the conclave if these allegations are true. Dr. J. hasn’t followed the the sexual abuse scandal very closely, hence the use of wiggle words (alleged, etc.) However there may be a number of reasons he hasn’t been asked not to participate. One reason is that he is a member of the ‘progressive wing’ and were he banned the same people who rail against the Catholic Church calling its priests molesters AND behind the times will say, “Look, look they’re trying to rig the election by getting rid of the Cardinals who ‘get it!'”
Indeed, this quote from the article is very telling:
Jane Argento, a parishioner at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena, said she was livid at Mahony when she read about his actions after the archdiocese’s release of sex abuse documents. But she said the relatively liberal Mahony reflected her own Catholic convictions about larger roles for women in the church, among other issues. Mahony, she said, was the architect of a pastoral associate program in Los Angeles that had trained several women to run parishes, including her own.
“I’m relieved that Mahony is going,” Argento said. “Frankly, it’s one more vote for a more progressive church.”
Assuming these allegations are true, Dr. J. would be calling for him not to participate independent of his politics.” He finds it pretty disturbing that there are fellow Catholics of any political stripe that find his actions disgusting (which, if true, the are) and yet, want him to vote in hopes of a more liberal Catholic Church. What’s a little cover up of child molestation if it means giving the imprimatur to abortion, gay marriage, birth control and women and married priests, in other words Episcopalianism without upsetting grandma.
It reminds him of the deafening silence of feminists revolving around President Clinton’s abuse of power in his affair with a subordinate during his time in offices. Yes that’s an apple/orange comparison, but it makes the point.
The second article is regarding a Scottish Cardinal who apparently wasn’t taking his Vow of Chastity very seriously, and is not participating in the Conclave.
Dr. J. knows we are a fallen people, and sin is the easy way. He himself is not perfect. But that being said, it is pretty pathetic that the MSM is salivating at describing every wart on the Catholic Church as we enter this uncertain period of the Conclave. While any sexual abuse by priests is disgraceful and any coverup is doubly so, remember that Catholic priests as a group have violated their parishioners trust in this regard at a rate far less than public school teachers and non-Catholic pastors. Dr. J. prays the Cardinals are inspired to select a wonderful successor to Benedict XVI.
