Mr. Precedent
How can one begin to count up the number of times someone has said This has been a bad week for President Obama.
This observation is not there to gloatit is there to make us realize how bad a job hes doing. The Czar is already sick of people starting sentences with If he were a Republican… No kidding. But to their credit, the good news out of that isnt how much Americans are realizing the media kid gloves a Democratic president, but when a Republican is eventually elected to the Presidencyand it may not be for a whileabsolutely no one is going to take the old-fashioned media criticisms seriously thanks to Obama.
And indeed, that is the subject of todays little screed. President Obama has never learned about precedent. Hes getting a good lesson: insult lawmakers, and no one will support your requests for legislation. Negotiate from the position that everyone else is stupid, and soon no one will talk to you. Insult our allies because you think your enemies will like you more, and pretty soon no one wants to do business with your country.
Actions have consequences. He was tough enough to say that to Republicans in his first term, but he never understood what it meant. But the President has done something else without any long-term strategy: he has lowered the bar for the Presidency.
Worse than Nixon, to be sure: a future presidentwhether Republican or Democratcan practically get away with anything in the future and cite President Obama as the inspiration.
Spy on our own citizens? Obama did it.
Ignore a climbing unemployment? Obama did it.
Declare war without approval? Obama and Obama.
Create laws out of thin air? Obama, Obama, and Obama.
Vacation in the middle of a crisis? Obama, Obama, Obama, and Obama.
Kill an American citizen without trial? Obama did that, too.
Yes, it is bad what Obama has done and continues to do with the US Constitution. But what is far worse is what he is allowing future Presidents to do: basically, whatever they want. Nearly everything we tell foreigners an American president would never do, he has done.
And compounding the problem is that Obama, unlike Nixon, never takes responsibility for anything. His gut reaction is that Bush did it. Or Reagan did it.
Nearly every unpleasant, corrupt, or illegal action a future President can take, though, will almost certainly involve Obama did it.
Yes, Obama made history when he was elected. Unfortunately, he still is making history; he will weep over what history says about him.
Божію Поспѣшествующею Милостію Мы, Дима Грозный Императоръ и Самодержецъ Всероссiйскiй, цѣсарь Московскiй. The Czar was born in the steppes of Russia in 1267, and was cheated out of total control of all Russia upon the death of Boris Mikhailovich, who replaced Alexander Yaroslav Nevsky in 1263. However, in 1283, our Czar was passed over due to a clerical error and the rule of all Russia went to his second cousin Daniil (Даниил Александрович), whom Czar still resents. As a half-hearted apology, the Czar was awarded control over Muscovy, inconveniently located 5,000 miles away just outside Chicago. He now spends his time seething about this and writing about other stuff that bothers him.
