More Left Spins
GorT has been meaning to write about Confederate flags, gay marriage, and a few other relevant topics, but the last few weeks have been a bit crazy for the shiny, silver robot. However, when perusing his Facebook feed over the last few days, one post that several liberals have posted is this poster about, “if you may $50,000 per year, you pay….” and it concludes with “…$4,000 in corporate subsidies”
This only goes to prove that liberals have little understanding of taxes in general and the United States tax code. Maybe this would be a good reason for a fair or flat tax – there would be no disputes about this kind of thing.
First, one can read through to the links provided and what the original author claims is that an individual tax payer is paying $4,000 per year for tax subsidies. But the reality is that these are “tax expeditures” and that doesn’t mean the federal government is paying for them but rather the tax burden of the entity is reduced by that amount. In essence, what liberals are desiring is more tax revenue by eliminating these so the federal government would have more money with which to operate.*
Second, we should question whether they mean they want to end ALL corporate subsidies or just the ones they deem should be ended. Like the $13B+ annual subsidy for renewable energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, etc. or the $15B+ annual on clean sources like clean coal, nuclear, natural gas, etc. or the hundreds of millions in subsidies to unions?
This country already has a corporate tax environment (ranks #32 out of 34 OECD countries, and #33 out of 34 in the corporate tax ranking category) and my guess is that we’ll be well below #34 if we were to end these subidies without major tax code reform. Many liberals want us to emulate Sweden and other European countries – guess where they are in corporate tax ranks? Number four.
Can you imagine a world where the United States goes to a “fair tax” like system? One where the IRS is essentially disbanded. Where political jockeying for tax breaks and incentives are no longer a tool in the politician’s toolbox. Where everyone (above a certain poverty level-like earning line) has skin in the game. It would radically change the social and political landscape in this country….probably for the better.
* Yeah, after the OPM debacle and countless other government incompetencies, I think the last thing they need is more of our money.
GorT is an eight-foot-tall robot from the 51ˢᵗ Century who routinely time-travels to steal expensive technology from the future and return it to the past for retroinvention. The profits from this pay all the Gormogons’ bills, including subsidizing this website. Some of the products he has introduced from the future include oven mitts, the Guinness widget, Oxy-Clean, and Dr. Pepper. Due to his immense cybernetic brain, GorT is able to produce a post in 0.023 seconds and research it in even less time. Only ’Puter spends less time on research. GorT speaks entirely in zeros and ones, but occasionally throws in a ڭ to annoy the Volgi. He is a massive proponent of science, technology, and energy development, and enjoys nothing more than taking the Czar’s more interesting scientific theories, going into the past, publishing them as his own, and then returning to take credit for them. He is the only Gormogon who is capable of doing math. Possessed of incredible strength, he understands the awesome responsibility that follows and only uses it to hurt people.
