Obama is in Northern Ireland for the G8 Summit and in front of over 2,000 young people many of whom are Catholic, he made the following statement:<\/p>\n

If towns remain divided\u2014if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can\u2019t see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden\u2014that too encourages division and discourages cooperation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Your Gormogons know of Catholic education at all levels. In each, at least some of us had non-Catholics enrolled alongside Catholics. In each, I would submit, we never saw those children treated or educated differently. Catholic teaching extols us to treat one another with dignity and respect regardless of religious beliefs. While we are called to evangelize our faith, it is not a call for exclusion, segregation, or to hold a belief that non-believers are less equal as fellow humans.<\/p>\n

I’m sure many Catholic democrats who have somehow ignored aspects of the Democrat party’s platform on various issues and support President Obama will write this off as well. It may be harder for the subset of those who attended some level of Catholic education but they will likely do so. I wonder if they truly will exercise any critical thinking and really examine what is going on here. Do they see the policies (e.g. HHS Mandates for birth control coverage) and the public statements such as this and not have some level of concern? <\/p>\n

As pointed out in various news sources, Archbishop Gerhard M\u00fcller, prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith ironically presented a different view of Catholic education:<\/p>\n

Catholic education provide[s] a rare place where \u2018intellectual training, moral discipline and religious commitment would come together<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

and<\/p>\n
