\"\"<\/a>‘Puter hates hisself pension funds and gubbamint trying to manage money, even taken one at a time. \u00a0Putting them together in one place is like pouring gasoline on a fire: it looks cool from a distance, but you don’t want to be anywhere near it when it goes down. \u00a0And that’s what happens when you have governments managing pension funds: catastrophic results. \u00a0Aside from the gubbamints’ usual problem of playing politics with pension money rather than soundly investing it (see, e.g., divest from Israel movements<\/a>), it turns out we now have to worry about the boneheads exaggerating the funds’ projected returns, creating a significant undisclosed future liability.<\/p>\n

Publicly funded pension funds are the ticking time bomb no one wants to discuss. \u00a0GM’s pension fund shortfalls<\/a>\u00a0have brought it to the brink of bankruptcy (along with current oil prices). \u00a0Cobb County, Georgia’s pension fund is about 40% underfunded<\/a>. \u00a0Vallejo, California recently filed a Chapter 9 bankruptcy<\/a>, seeking relief from its pension obligations, which obligations were bankrupting the town. \u00a0Vallejo’s ever helpful union refused to negotiate the issue.<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
New accounting rules<\/a>\u00a0(GASB 45) are requiring public entities to book the current value of the future cost of other post employment benefits (OPEBs) such as health care, which figure is staggering. \u00a0Now, actuarial rules<\/a> are going to require public entities to project rates of return according to the same restrictions placed on private firms, rather than the pie-in-the-sky returns pension managers had been plugging into their calculations. \u00a0Under the new actuarial rules, approximately 40% of public pension funds are underfunded.<\/div>\n

And guess who’s on the hook for this shortfall? \u00a0That’s right. \u00a0‘Puter and you, the little guy taxpayers. \u00a0So, after we get done paying for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, remain bent over, because you’ll be paying for governments absolute mismanagement of its pension funds. \u00a0The good to come out of this? \u00a0Perhaps a wave of municipal bankruptcies will focus voters’ minds on electing sound fiscal managers.<\/div>\n
